The annual Alive After Five concert series presents Big Daddy Love on June 20th. The19th annual series in Uptown Shelby gets underway at 5:30 and continues on until 8:30 that evening. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, and dancing is always encouraged.

Shelby Amateur Radio Club and ARES of Cleveland County (sponsored by the Shelby Amateur Radio Club) will be holding their annual ARRL Field Day on June 22nd at 2PM at Cleveland County Fairgrounds. The group will be operating 24 hours on emergency power to simulate operations during a disaster. The event is open to the public so that anyone interested can come by and check out amateur radio.

Fifty came by for a visit a few weeks ago. He’s not leaving and more of his friends are coming over soon enough. It’s okay though because I wasn’t dreading his arrival. It doesn’t make much sense to try to stave off what is inevitable. Besides, that futile effort is just a waste of what time one has left.

The retirees fished Lake Wylie last week with Tony Black and Ned Blanton getting the win with 14.90. John Black and Roger McNeely brought in 11.75 and claimed second. They also had big bass of the night with a 4.30 largemouth. Mack Wyatt had 6.60 and took third. This week its back to Lake Norman.
I have yet to engage in some serious river fishing this spring. I have been especially busy and it will be at least 2 more weeks until I can jump in my little boat and float down the river. That doesn’t mean that my outdoor activities have stopped; only the ones that involve fish and game.

The Shelby Lions Club presented a check for $1000 to NC Lions. The local club raised the money with its recent participation in “walk across N.C.” District Governor George Suggs of Lions District 31-A accepted the check during a recent meeting of the Shelby Club.
The Extension Master Gardener program is an educational program designed to enhance public education in consumer horticulture. It provides educational assistance to the citizens of the county concerning lawns, fruits, vegetables, trees, and ornamentals through the utilization of a trained and supervised volunteer staff.

Matt Harris graduated from Chase High School in 1994, then became a student at NC State and received a BS in Agriculture & Extension Education, graduating cum laude in 1999. He then obtained his Masters Degree from NC State in 2001.
The Shelby Lions Club gave out 101,000 lbs. of food, valued at $79,380, to 7,245 people during the Spring commodity food distribution on June 3rd through June 5th.
