More than 600 volunteers will be in American Legion World Series (ALWS) uniforms for the five-day tournament that begins with the first pitch at 9:30am Friday, Aug.16. Four games will be played on Friday and Saturday, three on Sunday, two on Monday and possibly two on Tuesday.
On August 5th the Cleveland County Health Department with its collaborative sponsors began registration for the 8th Annual Step One Challenge county-wide walking contest. This contest is a community-wide approach to increasing physical activity and supporting obesity prevention strategies for all residents of the county.
Keith Rhodes will be giving FREE haircuts to any child who is a school student, at Maple Springs Baptist Church on Saturday., Aug. 24 from 9 am-12 pm. The Kosa retirees fished Lake Wylie this past week. John Black fished solo and picked up the win. Black brought in 9.10 to beat out fellow soloist, Ronnie Humphries, who had 6.12. Fred Wright and Mack Wyatt settled in third with 5.60. Big bass was a 5.29 largemouth brought in by Tony Black. This week, the rocking chair gang head back to Lake Norman.
I’ve got one more bass fishing trip in store before I turn into a deer hunter. My friends love hunting season because they now have the lake to themselves. T

Fifteen students in the Practical Nursing program were awarded pins during a special ceremony held at Cleveland Community College. The ceremony was held in the Student Activities Center on Thursday, August 2.
Big Daddy Love (pictured) was one of the featured bands on the main stage during the 7th Inning Stretch Festival which took over Uptown Shelby. Other performances included the SloanTones and The Southern Experience Band.
Uptown Shelby finally got to experience one heck of a show by the band, “Overmountain Men”, at the last “Alive After 5” concert on August 8th. Their original performance date was rescheduled from May 23rd, due to bad weather.
