Marlene Davis Bridges, 70, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Vail Olin Doty, age 83, of Shelby, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at Wendover Hospice House.
The Cleveland County Bass Club fished their last event on Mountain Island Lake recently. Jaime Canipe got the win with 4.44. Larry Melton had 3.10 to take second.
As a young adult, I remember fishing the river bank at Mr. MacDonald’s farm. He was an older man whose property ran along the river. I don’t remember how we first discovered this place but it seemed to not upset him when we set up camp on his farm.

Shelby American Legion Post 82
Shelby American Legion Post 82 is sponsoring the annual high school oratorical contest. It is open to students in grades 9-12, including those home-schooled, who are citizens of the U.S. or lawful permanent residents. The local contest will be held Saturday, January 11, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby.
The Cleveland County Astronomical Society (CCAS) will host the 22nd annual Regional Meeting of Amateur Astronomers on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 at the Tucker Student Center at Gardner-Webb University. This FREE event opens at 8:00 a.m. with the program beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m.

The open enrollment period for Pinnacle Classical Academy will run from January 3rd through March 14, 2014 at 4:00 pm. Pinnacle Classical Academy will hold student lead tours at the school located at 900 S. Post Road, Shelby, on January 10th and 17th, February 7th and 21st, and March 7th and 14th from 9:00-11:00 am.
