George Turner Cabaniss Jr., age 82, died Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at his home. Born in Cleveland County on January 15, 1936 he was the son of the late George Turner and Georgia Bryte Beam Cabaniss. George was a lifelong member of Zion Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He retired from Hoechst Celanese where he worked as a chemical operator for a number of years. George enjoyed watching the Braves and gardening. In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by his sisters, Elizabeth Blanton, Aileen Cabaniss, Sarah Johnson, and Carolyn Diehl.; a brother, Joe Cabaniss.
George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice McSwain Cabaniss; two daughters, Sandy Cabaniss Darnell and husband Joe of Shelby, and Lorah Cabaniss Gold and husband Ned of Shelby; two grandchildren, Bonnie Gold and Benjamin Gold and fiancée Mindy Chu; two brothers Robert Cabaniss and wife Evelyn of Greensboro and Hal Cabaniss and wife Martha of Shelby; two sisters, Brenda Curtis and husband Steve of Shelby and Doris Wright of Melbourne FL.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Dr. Matt Storie officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Baptist Church. The family will receive friends an hour before the service from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm
