South Mountain State Park, 3001 South Mountains Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC, January 2018 Programs:
Saturday, January 13, 20, 27 - "Wintergreen Hike" -Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail, and learn about some of the many plant species that stay green all year long. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00am and 2:00pm for this easy one mile walk.
Sunday, January 14 - "Skulls & Skins" - Drop by between 2-3:00pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.
Sunday, January 14 & 28 - "Fly Fishing 101" - Get Hooked! Join angler Jeff Newton at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm for an introductory class on fly fishing. Please bring all personal equipment available. Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.
Sunday, January 21 & 28 - "Black Bears" - How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center.
Saturday, January 27 - "Wilderness Survival 101" - Wilderness Survival 101 will cover basic survival information as covered in the Boy Scouts of America handbook. Topics covered will include basic first aid, shelter and others based on class interest and instructor discretion. Program will be presented by park volunteer, Jeff Newton, who also teaches Fly Fishing 101 and has a great deal of experience in the outdoors. Program is free and open to the public. Please meet at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm.
South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.

Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening
Cleveland County Schools Preschool Screening for the 2018-2019 preschool classes will be: March 19-23, 2018 (no make-up screening will be offered.) Location: Office of School Readiness, 308 W. Marion Street Building B, Shelby, NC 28150 (location of old Shelby Middle School, small building near tennis courts. Parking is in back.) This is for children who live in Cleveland County and will be 4 years old by August 31, 2018. For more information or to schedule a screening appointment, please call 704-476-8064 between the hours of 8:30am - 3:00pm. Appointments will be made until all are booked. No appointments will be made after February 24, 2018. Screening provided by appointment only.

Extension Service and Cleveland Community College in Shelby, NC is hosting Cabin Fever Saturday, February 10, 2018. Register now! Whether you are new to gardening or have cultivated many plots, the presenters here will help you learn and grow as a gardener and get your mind ready to be outside in the warmer weather we are all looking forward to. Speakers include Bryce Lane, Dr. Barbara Fair, Jeanne Aller and Amy Climi. A host of vendors, door prizes and great presentations make this event a much-needed break in the cold weather!
